Commission Installation, “George L. Carter” Portrait Bust (bronze) on the campus of East Tennessee State University
George L. Carter was a self-made man in the largest sense. East Tennessee State University publications note, “He built towns such as Kingsport, TN; developed the region’s coal and natural resource industries; established the banks, brickyards, and factories from which the region’s economy would grow; and in building the Clinchfield Railroad, saw to fruition the most difficulty and expensive railway line ever constructed in America . . . His gift of land allowed Johnson City to be the home of ETSU.”
