The Art of Richard Pumphrey

Thank you for visiting this site featuring the art of Richard Pumphrey. He is known for creating many types of sculpture, including portrait busts, woodcarvings, and religious pieces. Currently, Richard is creating mobiles of various sizes and media. He is an impassioned designer and author on the subject. The MENU at the left of the home page provides links to representations of sculptures highlighted on this site, in addition to related topics.

Most of Richard Pumphrey’s sculptures are created by commission. The success of each sculpture commission results from the close connection established between the client and the sculptor. Strong communication skills and attention to detail on the part of the sculptor ensure the client’s confidence during the entire designing and sculpting phases.

Richard’s portrait busts are many, including those made for colleges and universities and, especially, the National D-Day Memorial in Virginia. A live size bust of Thomas Jefferson is installed at his Poplar Forest residence. Portrait busts of children also populate his portfolio.

Monumental woodcarving and mixed media pieces—adding to the “Compromised” series—address the theme of atrocities committed against Afghani women by the Taliban. The Artist’s Statement at the bottom of the “woodcarving” link addresses the motivation and content of this series.
